Patient Safety Support Worker Trainee Programme

This dedicated programme from NHS Professionals helps to create a reliable supply of trainees, supporting care for the most vulnerable patients on your wards.

About the service

Our unique recruitment, training and development programme puts Patient Safety Support Worker (PSSW) Trainees where you need them the most – on your wards.

The specific training programme covers management of falls and risk, as well as dementia training (online and face-to-face). This means that when PSSW Trainees arrive on your ward, they already have the knowledge necessary to make an immediate difference to the care of vulnerable patients.

For those patients experiencing dementia, our Trainees are able to ease their anxieties and provide diversionary activities/reminiscence therapies. This will help to keep them engaged and support you in delivering an outstanding patient experience. In addition, Trainees can help to monitor patients’ food and drink intake, in conjunction with the nurse, to ensure these patients remain fed and hydrated.

Our service supports you by recruiting only those PSSW Trainee candidates who meet our standards. You will be involved at every stage of the process and retain full supervision of the PSSW Trainees as they work for 30 hours per week on your wards during their three or six-month placement.

With significant positive client feedback on the work of our Trainees, we’re proud of the contribution they make to the care of vulnerable patients on wards throughout England.
