Doctors Gateway Programmes have been created to provide Doctors who are new to the NHS an opportunity to start their career in safe and supported role. Our programmes are free of charge to complete and offer Doctors the ability to develop professionally and help the NHS manage their capacity.
The Doctors Gateway programme launched in 2019 and is part of Doctors Direct and NHS Professionals. We are owned by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) and recruit to the highest NHS employment standards. Our programmes have been devised to offer opportunities to a variety of Doctors who are looking to gain experience in the NHS.
We offer Doctors placements of up to 24 months at Gateway Partners across the UK. Our programmes offer stability, and the chance to develop your career in a clinically and educationally supported environment.
Our Gateway Programmes are a unique opportunity for Doctors wanting to begin work in the NHS. Whether you are a recent medical graduate from the EU*, or an international Doctor with several years’ experience, and would like to develop your career within the NHS, we have a programme that’s right for you.
The Gateway EU Programme has been created for UK citizens, or those with the Right to Work in the UK who have completed a medical degree within the last 12 months, or who are in the final 6 months of studies at a European University. This programme allows you to gain experience as a junior Doctor in the NHS.

The Gateway Specialty Programme is designed for junior Doctors who have completed the Gateway EU Programme, or Doctors who have completed Health Education England’s foundation training, who are looking for experience in a chosen specialty, prior to starting further training.

The Gateway Access Programme has been created to provide Doctors with Refugee status* their first role as a Doctor in the NHS.
